James Anderson joined the firm in 2016. As Principal Advisor, he provides clients with government relations and strategic communications advice on a broad range of issues.
A graduate of Carleton University (Political Science), Anderson has been involved in Ottawa’s political and public policy arenas for over 25 years. He has provided strategic counsel and policy analysis to prime ministers, premiers, cabinet ministers, deputy ministers, and business, NGO and municipal leaders.
After graduation, Anderson spent four years with a leading public affairs firm, advising clients on trade, procurement, transportation, broadcasting and other challenging files. He then spent a decade in senior policy roles in the federal and Ontario bureaucracies before serving in senior policy and communications positions in ministers’ offices during the Chretien and Martin years. During his time in government he has managed or advised on files in a broad range of areas, including: international trade; health; fisheries; Canada’s social welfare system; economic development; foreign affairs; and constitutional reform.
After re-joining the private sector, Anderson: co-founded and served as deputy publisher of iPolitics, an online political news service; served two years as the managing editor of the Macdonald-Laurier Institute’s Inside Policy magazine, a leading public policy journal; and provided public affairs and strategic communications advice to clients on an independent basis. Since 2013, he has been a partner in National Newswatch, an online political hub with a monthly audience of 150,000.
Anderson’s extensive political experience also includes leadership roles in federal and local campaigns, a period as a senior director at Liberal Party of Canada headquarters, an elected position on the Liberal Party of Canada (Ontario) executive, senior roles in federal leadership campaigns and, from 2006-2009, helping to drive the renewal of the federal Liberal Party through the development and adoption of a new constitution, new fundraising initiatives and a new, more sophisticated database management and voter identification system.
Over the years, Anderson has been extensively involved in his community, serving as president of his community association executive, leading local fundraising initiatives, coaching little league baseball and volunteering at local hockey rinks and charities.
